Assisting Australia’s Fight to Save Wildlife
Posted on November 11th, 2022.

Wildlife preserves and sanctuaries are fighting to save Australia’s wildlife amid devastating fires across the continent. Gayle Fleury’s special connection to Australia prompted her to set up two special event days where volunteers to sew much-needed supplies for the kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, koalas and other animals who lost their habitat and sustained injuries.

A HUGE thank-you to all our wonderful Angels who came to sew with us January 11th! We completed 18 kangaroo pouches, a dozen pairs of koala mittens, plus a number of bird nests. We had ladies sewing at home making more of these, during and after the day, plus we gave out a bunch of skeins of yarn for nests and pouches. In fact, ALL of the pieces that were cut out and waiting to be sewn were in the hands of friends.

There have been requests to join and help us from over a dozen people, some of whom joined us next time or mail us what they have done at home.

On January 25th, we held an Australia Day party, with lots of yummy Australian treats and more sewing! More bags of crocheted and knitted bird nests arrived, along with donations of fabric, and completed projects from the previous event.

A batch of Angel Gowns’ sewn objects have already arrived at their home, courtesy of Quantas employee, Danka Nikolovski! The next batch will go to Australia with Gayle in mid-February.
